Discount retailer Family Dollar Stores Inc (FDO.N: Quote, Profile , Research) said on Thursday sales at stores open at least a year rose 0.5 percent in September.

Analysts, on average, were expecting same-store sales to rise 0.7 percent, according to Reuters Estimates.

Soft apparel sales were offset by food, seasonal and prepaid services, the company said.



Last month, Family Dollar forecast September same-store sales would rise 1 percent to 3 percent. But when it reported quarterly earnings Oct. 4 it revised that forecast, saying September sales were expected to be flat to up 1 percent.

Total sales for the five weeks ended Oct. 6 rose 3.9 percent to $614.2 million.

Family Dollar said it expects October same-sales to be flat to up 2 percent.
