MILLIKEN - It's not exactly a Wal-Mart or Target, but for some it's just as
good.
A new Dollar General, 1740 E. Broad St., celebrated its grand opening last
weekend, giving Milliken and Johnstown residents a new and local place to shop.
"It is sort of equivalent to a Wal-Mart coming in, only on a much smaller
scale," said Jim Lutey, co-executive director of the Johnstown/Milliken Chamber
of Commerce. "They carry a lot of stuff that was not available in Johnstown or
Milliken."
Last weekend, the 8,322 square-foot store opened with free give-aways and
specials.
Emily Weiss, media relations manager with Dollar General Corp., said the company
decided to build in Milliken for a number of reasons, including the current
business and population demographics of what she called a region ready to grow.
"We are pleased with business, and the community's reception so far," Weiss
said.
Milliken Town Administrator Sheryl Trent said residents have anticipated the
store's opening for its variety. Some of the store's inventory includes paper
products, cleaning supplies, health products, foods, housewares, toys and basic
apparel. One-third of the store's stock is under $1.
"It's a great opportunity for people in Milliken to shop here in Milliken,"
Trent said. "They have everything you might need."
Linda Measner, Milliken's mayor, has visited the store, and said it is a sound
contribution to the business community.
"I hope it revitalizes the area," Measner said.
Lutey expects the new store will draw businesses to Traders Junction, where the
store is located, which has historically lacked businesses.
"It has always been half empty," Luty said.
